Škoda Found a Campaign Inside Its Own Name. The Háček Was the Idea

By Amruta Jadhav On Read 5 min read

Most car brands build campaigns around product specifications, lifestyle aspirations, or price-led offers. Škoda and Leo UK found their 2026 campaign hiding inside a diacritical mark above a single letter that most British people had been mispronouncing for years. The háček above the Š in Škoda produces a sound that English speakers instinctively stretch into: “Shhhh.” That involuntary reaction, the smile, the repetition, the drawing out of the sound, became the entire creative platform.

The Observation

The campaign does not treat the correct pronunciation of Škoda as a problem that requires formal correction. It treats it as a reaction that is universal and already happening. When people hear “Šhhhkoda” for the first time, they smile. They repeat it. They extend the opening sound. Instead of hiding or simplifying an unusual part of its name, Škoda turns it into the reason audiences will remember it.

Graham Lakeland, Creative Director at Leo UK, described what the brief required: “Great creative gives people a reason to join in. The challenge with our ‘Šhhhkoda’ campaign wasn’t just to tell people the brand is smart, spacious and stylish; it was to find an idea that would make those qualities culturally memorable. By turning the pronunciation of Škoda into a national talking point, we’ve created a campaign that invites participation and proves that sometimes the smallest detail can start the biggest conversations.”

Kirsten Stagg, Marketing Director at Škoda UK, described what the campaign does for the brand’s heritage: “The Š has always been part of our identity, but we’ve never really given it centre stage before. The campaign allows us to celebrate an authentic part of our Czech heritage while creating something playful, memorable and unmistakably Škoda which provides us with a springboard to establish that our cars are ‘Šmart’, ‘Špacious’ and ‘Štylish’.”

The Hero Film

The 60-second hero film follows the chain reaction that unfolds when people hear “Šhhhkoda” for the first time, passing the pronunciation from person to person across its full length. The response in each person’s face is the product demonstration. The sound is the hook. Supported by 30 and 6-second cutdowns, the film introduces three playful reframings of the brand’s core product messages: “Šmart,” “Špacious,” and “Štylish,” which reappear consistently throughout every channel in the campaign. The film was directed by Patrick Daughters through Anonymous Content, shot by DoP Suzie Levelle and edited by Ben Campbell at The Quarry.

The Out-of-Home and Transport

Large-scale OOH executions exaggerate the háček’s sound effect with an extended “Šhhhhhhhhhh,” transforming the brand’s key messages into “Šhhmart,” “Šhhpacious,” and “Šhhtylish.” The campaign includes a major Waterloo station takeover, Elizabeth Line escalator ribbon placements, and digital installations where “Šhhhh” stretches across screens and station environments. As Atlas OOH noted in its coverage, the Waterloo takeover and Elizabeth Line placements show how effectively the stretched “Šhhhh” interacts with physical environments, turning high-footfall transit spaces into immersive brand experiences. Media planning and buying was handled by PHD.

The Silence Mechanic

One of the campaign’s most considered layers is where it chooses to appear. The extended “Šhhhh” works as a hushing sound, which makes it particularly effective in environments where silence is already expected. Škoda’s sponsorship of ITV Showcase Drama gives the brand a recurring presence in the moments before some of the most-watched drama programming on British commercial television. A series of bespoke ITVX idents was produced as part of this layer, with linear TV idents to follow later in 2026. The campaign also appears in cinema environments and in the stands at major sporting events, where the hushing gesture draws attention to the brand precisely by creating quiet.

The Social and Digital Layer

Across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn, feature-led films, trend-inspired content, and automotive edits demonstrate Škoda’s practical features, storage solutions, spaciousness, and design. Every piece of content uses the same device: the extended Š as both a sound and a visual signature. The campaign was built to travel organically because the pronunciation reaction is participatory by nature. When someone hears “Šhhhkoda” and involuntarily repeats it, they have already joined in. The campaign converts that instinctive response into shareability without requiring any additional creative mechanic.

Why the Idea Works

The háček is a genuine piece of Czech linguistic heritage. It belongs to Škoda and to no competitor in the category. Placing it at the centre of a UK campaign is both commercially smart and culturally honest. As Decision Marketing noted in its coverage, the campaign gives Škoda a distinctive idea that works across television, social media, cinema, and OOH, turning what was previously an overlooked typographic detail into the brand’s most memorable asset.

The distinctiveness of the campaign device is entirely protected by the brand name itself. A rival cannot use the same idea because a rival does not have the same letter. That level of brand-intrinsic creative protection is rare enough that when it appears, it is worth every execution the agency can find for it.
