Rockstar Games paid $975,000 to put “Welcome to Vice City” on top of Miami.

GTA 6 is set in a fictional state called Leonida, built around a city called Vice City. Vice City is Miami. Not inspired by Miami. Not loosely based on Miami. It is Miami: the Art Deco hotels, the Biscayne Bay waterfront, the specific downtown skyline, and the Kaseya Center arena, home of the Miami Heat, which appeared in Rockstar’s very first GTA 6 trailer in December 2023, recognisable to every Miami resident who saw it. Rockstar had already placed Miami inside the game. On September 22, 2026, with the game two months from launch, they reversed the relationship and placed the game inside Miami.

Rockstar Games paid $975,000 to put "Welcome to Vice City" on top of Miami.

The city made the stunt possible in a way no other location could have. Every other major city Rockstar could have chosen would have required an explanation. Miami required none. The Vice City connection has been embedded in gaming culture since 2002, when Grand Theft Auto: Vice City first put players on Rockstar’s version of Ocean Drive and made the city’s neon-drenched, sun-bleached aesthetic synonymous with the franchise. Rockstar returning to Vice City for GTA 6 is the most anticipated gaming event in years, and Miami’s residents, whose city has been living inside a video game for twenty-four years, are the most prepared audience in the world for a campaign that reverses the fiction back onto their streets.

Miami’s government was ready too. Commissioners voted to allow Rockstar to pay for permits letting private entities display banners larger than normally allowed. Miami-Dade County negotiated directly for $975,000 from Rockstar for the Kaseya Center rooftop placement. The county owns the arena. The city owns the Vice City association. The campaign was not imposing an external brand onto an indifferent location. It was completing a loop that began with Rockstar using Miami as a source twenty-four years ago.

The Sign

On September 22, 2026, a helicopter lowered the final pink-and-white letters of a “Welcome to Vice City” sign onto the roof of the Kaseya Center in downtown Miami. The deal splits the $975,000 payment in two tranches: $487,500 when the sign became substantially functional and the remainder across subsequent months. The sign is contracted to remain in place through at least the Miami Heat’s 2026-27 NBA season, taking it into April 2027, five months after the game’s launch on November 19.

The placement operates on two simultaneous levels. The Kaseya Center sits in downtown Miami, visible from the air to anyone approaching from the north or west. The arena appeared in GTA 6’s very first trailer as part of the fictional Vice City. Rockstar spent five months putting a sign on a building that was already in the game.

Other proposed elements of Miami’s GTA 6 transformation have progressed more slowly. Three additional planned installations remained unfinished at the time of the Kaseya sign’s completion. One proposal that did not progress: temporarily rebranding Miami International Airport as Vice City Airport. The Miami-Dade sheriff rejected it because the game depicts violence against law enforcement.

The Precedent of the Installation

The Kaseya Center rooftop sign operates as a piece of marketing that generates news coverage, aerial photography, social media documentation, and international press attention from audiences with no particular interest in GTA 6 but considerable interest in watching a real city be temporarily renamed.

The $975,000 spent on the sign is, by the standards of a game with a production budget estimated in the hundreds of millions, a relatively modest outlay. The earned media generated by the rooftop installation, captured on camera by local news helicopters and shared globally within hours of the final letter being placed, converts that outlay into an attention return that no conventional advertising placement at that price point could replicate.

The Brand Wave That Followed

The rooftop sign was not the only piece of GTA 6 cultural momentum building in September 2026. On September 15, eight musicians posted coordinated artwork on Instagram and X simultaneously, all rendered in GTA 6’s signature visual style and each tagging Rockstar Games. The GTA 6 aesthetic, saturated neon colours, tropical Vice City lighting, dramatic pink sunsets, glossy reflections, and hyper-detailed close-ups that could pass for a Rockstar loading screen, was suddenly one of the most widely recognised visual languages in the world.

Brands noticed. None of them had a deal with Rockstar. None of them needed one.

BMW, Hyundai, Yamaha, Burger King Spain, Deutsche Telekom, JBL, Turtle Beach, Paris FC, Gas Monkey Garage, and dozens of others posted social media content styled to match the GTA 6 aesthetic. Cars photographed against Vice City sunsets. Products rendered in the game’s signature neon palette. Brand logos given the Rockstar treatment. All posted with GTA 6 references that made the intended association unmissable.

None of these were official partnerships. Rockstar and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had confirmed in April 2026 that GTA 6 would feature no real-world brand partnerships or product placement inside the game, stating: “All the brands are made up. We’re not even at risk of doing brand partnerships.” The brands styling their Instagram posts after GTA 6 were not paying Rockstar anything. They were appropriating a visual language that the gaming audience had already made enormously valuable, with nothing more than a good art director and a trending colour palette.

GTA Boom described it precisely: “It is opportunistic real-time marketing, the kind that costs nothing but a good art director and a trending style to copy.”

The November Target

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The Kaseya Center sign will still be up. The Miami Heat’s home games will continue to be broadcast with “Welcome to Vice City” visible on the arena’s roof.

Rockstar has not run a conventional advertising campaign for GTA 6. It has produced events: a trailer that broke viewership records in December 2023, a coordinated artist post campaign in September 2026, and a rooftop installation lowered onto a public arena by helicopter. Each one was the news. The news was the campaign.
