Life insurance in Romania pays out when someone dies. Generali decided it should also pay out to prevent that death from happening. The result is one of the most structurally unusual insurance products launched in Europe in recent memory, and the first time a life insurer has used its own financial discount mechanism to fund first aid education at national scale.
The Problem It Was Built For
Romania loses approximately 70,000 people every year to preventable emergencies. The word preventable is the key one. These are not deaths that occur because the medical system lacked the equipment to treat them. Many occur in the critical “golden minutes” before an ambulance arrives, when the only person present is a bystander who does not know what to do.
VML and Generali commissioned a national readiness barometer through research partner Frappe Digital to understand the scale of that bystander problem. The findings were specific: eight out of ten urban Romanians do not trust themselves to administer first aid correctly. Half of them said their hesitation came from fear of making a mistake rather than from lack of willingness. Seven out of ten, however, said they would want to learn if given the opportunity.
The gap between those two statistics, nearly universal hesitation and nearly universal willingness to change, is where the campaign found its brief.
The Product
(SAVE A) LIFE INSURANCE is structured around a single mechanism: customers who complete a certified first aid training course receive an immediate discount on their life insurance policy, applied throughout the first year of the contract. The training programme runs across six interactive online modules on Generali’s website, covering the most critical first response interventions. Certification is granted on completion. For those wanting hands-on practice, in-person sessions run in Bucharest in partnership with EDIT, a Romanian health and education NGO, with trainers delivering practical exercises in real-world settings.
The parenthetical in the product name is the entire idea in shorthand. Life insurance already does the second part. (SAVE A) adds the first.
Bogdan Teodorescu, Executive Creative Director at VML Romania, described what the campaign was trying to dismantle: “Normally, insurance policies sit quietly in a folder somewhere in a cupboard, waiting for misfortune to strike. We wanted to change the perception of this rigid product and turn it into a tool that can genuinely play an active role in everyday life.”
The Structural Inversion
The insurance industry’s business model is built around the assumption that risk assessment and financial payout are its core functions. The insurer calculates the probability of a bad outcome and prices the policy accordingly. The customer pays. The event happens, or it does not. The relationship is passive by design.
(SAVE A) LIFE INSURANCE converts the passive relationship into an active one. The insurer is no longer rewarding customers for dying. It is rewarding customers for making death less likely. The financial incentive that runs in one direction in every other life insurance product, toward the policyholder’s estate after they are gone, runs in the opposite direction here: toward the policyholder while they are alive and toward the people around them who might need help before an ambulance arrives.
The Cannes Recognition
At Cannes Lions 2026, (SAVE A) LIFE INSURANCE won a Bronze Lion in PR, making it the first Cannes Lion in Generali Romania’s history. The campaign received four shortlist nominations across the festival in total, covering PR, Creative Strategy, and Creative Business Transformation. Ana Maria Pocora, Marketing and CRM Director at Generali Romania, described the significance: “At Cannes Lions, it was not just a campaign that was awarded. It was the conviction that an insurance brand can contribute to saving lives and generate change in society. For Generali Romania, this Bronze is a historic milestone.”
The PR Lions jury recognised the campaign as a demonstration that a financial services product could be repositioned from a morbid obligation into a proactive community safety tool, a shift that required a structural change to the product itself rather than a change in how the product was communicated.
Why the Approach Works
The campaign does not ask Romanians to care more about life insurance. It gives them a reason to engage with it that has nothing to do with contemplating their own death. First aid knowledge is something people want. A discount on a financial product they were already going to buy is something they want. The combination converts two separate desires into one action that achieves both simultaneously and reduces national preventable mortality as a byproduct.
