Every new driver in the UAE learns to park, reverse, lane change, and brake. Until November 2022, not one of them was taught how to navigate a drive-thru. McDonald’s UAE and Studio M, powered by Publicis Groupe, decided that was a gap worth closing, and they closed it inside one of the UAE’s busiest driving schools.
The Observation
Drive-thrus are the dominant format for fast food consumption in the UAE. The country’s road culture, wide lanes, car-dependent urban design, and extreme summer temperatures have made the drive-thru a default rather than an option for millions of daily food transactions. More than in almost any other market, ordering from a car window is simply how eating out works.
What nobody had addressed is that driving a car through a commercial drive-thru lane requires a specific set of micro-skills that standard driving lessons do not cover. Precise stopping distance from the window. Turning radius through a tight lane bordered by kerbing on both sides. Positioning relative to the ordering speaker. Managing the transaction while the vehicle remains in gear. For a new driver already managing mirrors, indicators, speed, and lane discipline, the drive-thru adds a layer of complexity that can make the experience genuinely intimidating.
The Programme
McDonald’s UAE partnered with Emirates Driving Institute, the UAE’s leading driving school, to build a fully functional, realistic McDonald’s drive-thru inside the institute’s practice circuit. The installation replicated the visual and navigational experience of an actual McDonald’s drive-thru in every detail: the lane markings, the kerbing, the window position, the ordering point, the geometry of the approach and exit. Students experienced it as a real drive-thru because it was built to function as one.
The programme was delivered as a surprise. Students attending a standard lesson were not told in advance that a drive-thru lesson was coming. Their instructors guided them through the experience on the day, coaching turns, stops, and positioning in real time as students navigated the lane for the first time. The element of surprise ensured that the lesson registered as a genuine new experience rather than a staged exercise.
Kalpesh Patankar, Chief Creative Officer at Leo Burnett UAE, described the problem the programme identified: “Drive-thru is more popular than ever in the UAE. It’s one of the most convenient ways to pick up something on the road. But while it adds comfort and convenience to people’s lives, one thing was left unaddressed: how to drive in a Drive-Thru.”
Walid Fakih, CEO at McDonald’s UAE, articulated the brand’s motivation alongside the practical one: “Our Drive-Thru service brings convenience to our community and we want new drivers to experience it and learn how to seamlessly navigate through its lanes, while creating memorable experiences.”
The Strategic Logic
The Drive-Thru Programme is one of the most cost-efficient brand activations McDonald’s UAE has produced. The physical build required a temporary structure inside an existing practice circuit. The media was earned, with the surprise lesson format generating content that spread organically. The campaign required no paid media spend to reach its intended audience because the experience itself was the content and the story.
The programme also addressed a commercially relevant outcome. A new driver who learns to navigate a drive-thru for the first time in a McDonald’s lane is more likely to return to that format with confidence. The lesson simultaneously removes an anxiety barrier and builds a positive first association. For a brand whose core UAE service model is built around the drive-thru, teaching people to use it comfortably is as commercially direct as any promotional offer.
McDonald’s UAE announced plans to reactivate the Drive-Thru Programme in 2023, signalling that the initial execution was considered successful enough to repeat.
