Columbia Sportswear is giving away a survival bunker. It is a 40-foot shipping container with a bunk bed, a kitchen, a bathroom, shelves of survival gear and a robot dog called Rocky. Tech billionaires pay for their bunkers. Columbia will hand this one to whoever proves they can survive outdoors.
What Silicon Valley Is Hiding From
The richest people in tech have become known for their escape plans, from underground shelters to remote estates and boltholes in New Zealand. Columbia saw a punchline in it.
“As we all watch tech people building bunkers to hide from their own tech, we want to reward the real survivalists and outdoors people who appreciate what Mother Nature has to offer,” said Matt Sutton, senior vice president of marketing at Columbia Sportswear.
What Comes Inside

The Don’t Panic Room is a modified 40-by-8-foot container built to run off the grid. It has a bunk bed, a small kitchen and dining area, a bathroom and shelves of tools, footwear and supplies. Rocky the robot dog is there so the winner is never alone.
The container is delivered to the winner’s door, and the official rules add $35,000 to the prize.
The Jackets You Open in an Emergency

One wall of the bunker is lined with sealed cans. Each holds a Columbia Terwilliger Trail Heat Seal Hooded Jacket, which has a reflective thermal lining inspired by emergency blankets. Pairs of waterproof Tellurix Titanium OutDry Mid shoes sit alongside.
“The idea of sealing one of our puffer jackets in a can works really well. It’s canned heat!” said Chris Araujo, senior director of brand creative at Columbia.
Skills, Not Money
To enter, people post a video of their survival skills on Instagram or submit it through Columbia’s campaign site. Entry is free and closes at 11:59pm ET on November 24, 2026. The contest is open to adults in the 48 contiguous US states and Washington DC.
The Boss Makes the Pitch
Columbia’s chairman and chief executive, Tim Boyle, fronts the launch film and dares viewers to earn the bunker. Benji Weinstein directed it for Smuggler.
“We’ve been making gear for bad weather and other unfortunate moments for almost 90 years,” Boyle said. “Hopefully the winner never needs the ‘Don’t Panic Room,’ but we made sure they’ll be warm and dry if the world does go to sh*t.”
Billboards Aimed at the Bunker Builders

The campaign launched on October 28 with a print ad in The New York Times and billboards across Silicon Valley, right in front of the people it mocks. Columbia also mailed special edition jacket cans to influencers, creators and journalists.
Who Made It
adam&eve\TBWA created the campaign as the latest chapter of Columbia’s “Engineered for Whatever” platform. Cut & Run edited the film and We. Communications handled PR.
“Whatever Mother Nature throws at you, it pays to have the right kit,” said Ant Nelson, chief creative officer at adam&eve\TBWA.
The billionaires bought their way out. Columbia is offering the same escape to anyone who can light a fire.
