Most brands spend their entire advertising budget trying to be aspirational. McDonald’s UAE spent theirs admitting they are not. The result was one of the most honest and awarded campaigns in the Middle East in 2025, and the only campaign from the region to win a Best Idea at The ANDY Awards in 2026.
The Internet Said It First
Nobody wakes up planning to take a first date to McDonald’s. The internet has been making this observation for years, across tweets, Reddit threads, and comment sections on every corner of the world. It is not an insult. It is just true. First dates happen at places where you perform the best version of yourself. McDonald’s is not that place. It is the place you go when the performance is over.
FP7McCann Dubai and McDonald’s UAE saw that cultural truth and made a decision that most brands never have the confidence to make: they agreed with it. Completely. And publicly.
The Campaign
Not for First Dates launched as a campaign built entirely around that admission. The tagline made it explicit: “Not for the first date. But for every other one.”
The campaign’s films and visuals showed couples at every stage of a real relationship. Not glossy, aspirational, first-impression couples in their finest clothes ordering carefully. Real couples, across real life stages: young pairs sharing laughs over fries, partners who stopped pretending years ago and eat exactly what they want, families who have been coming to the same McDonald’s for a decade. Every image is a relationship that has moved past the performance phase and arrived somewhere more honest.
Federico Fanti, Regional CCO at FP7McCann MENAT, described the thinking behind it: “Find the most honest truth and tell it in the most compelling way. The campaign embraced a not-so-flattering truth: people avoid McDonald’s for first dates, but they go there for every other one. Because McDonald’s is where you can be yourself.”
Nayaab Rais, Executive Creative Director at FP7McCann Dubai, added the line that explains why campaigns like this win awards: “Great ideas start with a truth well told.”
Why the Insight Works
The first date is the most performative version of a relationship. Both people are trying to signal something, their taste, their sophistication, their suitability. A restaurant choice on a first date is a statement about who you are and how seriously you are taking this. McDonald’s is not that statement, and both people at the table know it.
But the second date is different. And the fifth. And the hundredth. By the time a couple is ordering McDonald’s together on a Tuesday night because neither of them wants to cook, the relationship has become something real. McDonald’s exists inside that reality in a way that most of the restaurants people choose for first dates do not.
The campaign does not try to change that. It names it and claims it. McDonald’s is not where love begins. It is where love becomes comfortable enough not to need an occasion. That positioning, occupying the everyday rather than the aspirational, is harder to achieve than it looks and worth more once you have it.
The Execution
The campaign ran across films, OOH, and social. Photographer Mazen Abusrour’s visuals captured couples across different relationship stages with the authenticity the campaign required. The images are not styled to look spontaneous. They look genuinely ordinary, which is the campaign’s entire visual argument.
The distribution across outdoor and social in the UAE put the message in front of an audience that is, demographically, among the world’s most active on social media and one of the most likely to relate to a first-date anxiety that is universal regardless of nationality.
Production was handled by BIGSEA, with Executive Producer Serge Asaad delivering a campaign that needed to look neither too polished nor too raw, exactly comfortable enough to match the relationship stage it was representing.
The Recognition
Not for First Dates won a Bronze Lion in Outdoor at Cannes Lions 2025, where FP7McCann Dubai became the most awarded agency in MENA with seven Lions total that year. In 2026, the campaign won The ANDY Award for Best Idea, making it the only campaign from the SWANA region recognised at the ANDYs that year.
Tarek Miknas, CEO of FP7McCann MENAT, described what the win represented: “To be the only agency from our region recognised at The ANDYs is a proud moment, not just for FP7McCann, but for the wider creative community in MENAT.”
The recognition across both awards confirmed what the campaign had identified. An admission of weakness, handled honestly, is more persuasive than a claim of strength. McDonald’s did not win these awards by pretending to be something it is not. It won them by being exactly what it is, just more deliberately.
