Aldi made a jacket that folds into a shopping bag in 10 seconds

By Amruta Jadhav On Read 4 min read

46% of British shoppers regularly forget their reusable bags. 85% have a bag of bags sitting somewhere at home. Almost half end up buying another carrier at the checkout at least once a month. Aldi’s solution to this particular national embarrassment is to make the bag something you are already wearing when you walk through the door.

The Product

The Swag For Life Jacket is a waterproof navy bomber in Aldi’s blue and orange brand detailing, with a funnel neck and large pockets. In around 10 seconds, it folds and converts into a grocery-sized reusable carrier bag, ready for the checkout. The jacket is the bag. You are wearing your solution to the problem before you have remembered it is a problem.

The activation was developed by Taylor Herring, Aldi’s consumer PR agency. The jacket is not available to buy. It is available through an email giveaway at aldi.co.uk/swagforlife from September 23, 2026.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, described the brief with the brand’s characteristic directness: “Forgetting your bag for life is something we’ve all done, so our Swag For Life Jacket makes sure you’ll never be without one at the checkout again.”

The Research That Produced It

The campaign is built on Aldi’s own consumer research into the bag-forgetting behaviour. Beyond the headline figures, the research produced one genuinely illuminating data point: when shoppers forget their bag, a significant number reach for whatever is available. Alternatives people have used include cardboard boxes, buckets, baby changing bags, and pet carriers. 2% of respondents have used a wheelbarrow.

The wheelbarrow statistic is doing a specific job in the campaign’s PR narrative. It confirms that the problem is both universal and genuinely inconvenient, and it gives journalists, copywriters, and social media managers a single memorable detail that makes the story shareable without requiring any additional creative work.

The Pattern It Continues

The Swag For Life Jacket is the third piece of fashion-adjacent consumer PR Aldi UK has produced in 2026, and it follows a consistent creative philosophy: find the specific, relatable frustration that Aldi’s core shoppers experience, and solve it with a product that is simultaneously practical and inherently shareable.

In May 2026, Aldi launched a limited-edition Hawaiian shirt carrying prints of its famous Specialbuys middle aisle offers, turning the cult status of the Specialbuys section into wearable merch. In September 2026, an Aldi store in London turned entirely Barbie pink to coincide with a new doll range. Each activation applies the same structural logic: take something that already generates organic conversation among Aldi shoppers, give it a physical form, and make it available in a limited quantity through a mechanism that generates earned media.

Taylor Herring has built a consistent track record with this approach. The agency’s consumer PR work for Aldi operates on the principle that Aldi’s strongest brand asset is the cultural affection its existing customers already feel for the shopping experience, and that the most effective PR activations are the ones that reflect that affection back in a format the audience recognises and wants to participate in.

The Broader Commercial Context

The bag levy introduced in UK supermarkets in 2015, initially at 5 pence and raised to 10 pence in 2021, has reduced single-use plastic bag sales by over 95% across major retailers. It has also created a secondary problem: the accumulated drawer, cupboard, or garage corner full of reusable bags that shoppers purchase repeatedly because they keep arriving at the supermarket without the ones they already own. The Swag For Life Jacket does not solve the broader sustainability question. It solves the immediate, specific, embarrassing experience of standing at the Aldi checkout without a bag.

That specificity is what makes the product land. It is not a statement about sustainability. It is a solution to the particular Tuesday afternoon when you drove to Aldi after work and your bag of bags is sitting on the kitchen counter where you left it this morning.
