British Airways’ Rainy Puddle Ads Insist “It’s Always Sunny Somewhere”

By Amruta Jadhav On Read 3 min read

British Airways is selling winter sun with photos of British rain. Its new posters show puddles on wet streets, each one reflecting grey skies, people going about their day and, somewhere in the frame, a plane flying overhead. Every poster pairs the image with the name of a warm destination and the line “It’s always sunny somewhere.”

What the Puddles Show

Each photograph looks down into standing water on a rain-soaked British street. The puddle holds the whole scene, with the wet pavement, the buildings above it, the low cloud and a passerby, often with a figure sharp in the foreground. The mood is dark and damp, the way a British autumn feels by mid-November.

The puddle does two jobs. It is the setting, and it is also the camera, since the reflection is what turns an ordinary wet street into a picture.

The Plane in Every Frame

Every image catches an aircraft crossing the grey sky in the reflection. That small detail carries the message. The viewer sees the weather they are standing in, then spots the plane that could take them out of it.

The destination name finishes the thought. The street says Britain in winter, and the plane and the place name say somewhere warmer is a flight away.

Shot on Real Streets

Photographer Daniel Benson of Making Pictures shot the series as an unscripted reportage shoot. The people in the reflections are ordinary Britons getting on with a wet day rather than models on a set, which keeps the images true to the weather the audience knows.

Uncommon created the campaign. The agency has made British Airways’ advertising since 2022 under the airline’s “A British Original” platform.

Timed to the Grey Season

British Airways says the colder days, darker evenings and grey skies of winter bring a yearly rise in searches and bookings for winter sun. “Puddles” is timed to meet that moment.

The posters run on digital six-sheet screens at London railway stations, planned by MG OMD. Commuters passing those screens have often just stepped around the same puddles on the way in, so the ad shows them their own journey with an exit in the sky.

From the Window Seat to the Pavement

The campaign continues the photographic approach of last year’s “Reflections.” That work, also by Uncommon, used reflections from the cabin window, with the British Airways logo reflected on the engine and views of the New York skyline, beaches in the Bahamas and Morocco’s Atlas Mountains below. Four photographers travelled across three continents, and every image was shot in camera.

“Moments like this are different for each of us, but we’ve all had one,” said Nils Leonard, co-founder of Uncommon, at the time.

“Puddles” moves the reflection from 35,000 feet down to the pavement. Last year showed the view from the plane. This year shows the plane from the street, through the weather people want to leave behind.
