The internet has been debating the correct amount of ketchup for as long as there has been an internet to debate things on. A light dip for the cautious. A precise zigzag for the methodical. A full blanket for the committed. Heinz has been watching that debate for years, and on August 10, 2026, it responded with a lid.
The Love Lid

The Heinz Love Lid is the first customisable ketchup closure in the brand’s 157-year history, developed with Wieden+Kennedy London and Beta Design Office. The lid fits a standard Heinz Tomato Ketchup bottle and operates through a rotating core mechanism that physically adjusts the flow opening across three distinct settings. Like is the narrowest aperture, a controlled dip or drizzle. Love is the mid setting, a steady pour suited to burgers and hot dogs. Crazy Love opens the widest flow, for the people who consider a burger unfinished until it is wearing a blanket of ketchup.
The mechanism is constructed from standard polypropylene, the same material used in conventional ketchup closures, keeping manufacturing complexity minimal while delivering a meaningful functional change. The engineering behind it was documented by Packaging World, which confirmed that the rotating core is the operative innovation, allowing the consumer to dial in their preferred flow rate rather than squeezing harder or more carefully to compensate for a fixed aperture.
Why It Was Built
Nina Patel, Vice President of Global Heinz at Kraft Heinz, described the origin of the product in terms that reflect both the commercial and cultural reading of the opportunity: “We all experience love differently and our fans’ connection to ketchup is no exception. People have deeply personal rituals around how much ketchup they squeeze, and we celebrate every one of them. Whether they ‘like it,’ ‘love it,’ or have full-on ‘crazy love,’ there’s no wrong way to enjoy HEINZ. The Love Lid is an innovation that lets consumers squeeze to their heart’s content, because HEINZ has always been more than a condiment, and this summer we’re proving we have a love language all our own.”
The product was explicitly described by Kraft Heinz as inspired by “passionate online discourse” from ketchup lovers debating how much ketchup is the right amount to use for different foods. The campaign converts an argument that was happening around the brand without its involvement into a product that hands the argument’s resolution directly to the consumer.
The Distribution Model
The Love Lid is not available at retail. It is not replacing the standard Heinz closure in any market. It is available exclusively as a limited-edition grilling season bundle: one bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup, one Love Lid, and a printed squeeze guide suggesting recommended settings for different foods. The bundle is available in the US exclusively through Walmart.com, accessible via TheLoveLid.com, and in the UK through HeinzToHome.co.uk.
The e-commerce exclusive decision has practical packaging implications, as noted by Packaging World. A bundle sold through direct-to-consumer shipping must survive parcel delivery rather than pallet-to-shelf retail distribution, which changes the secondary packaging requirements significantly. Kraft Heinz confirmed the exclusive arrangement but declined to characterise it further.
The Pattern It Belongs To
The Love Lid is the third significant packaging innovation Heinz and Rethink or Wieden+Kennedy have launched in an 18-month period that has repositioned packaging itself as a creative category for the brand. The Heinz Dipper, launched in January 2026 across 11 countries, added a pop-out ketchup compartment to the standard fry box, physically shaped like the Heinz Keystone logo. The “Look Familiar?” campaign, which won the Print and Publishing Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2026, established that the fry box and the Heinz logo had always been the same shape. The Love Lid extends the same logic into the bottle’s own closure: the product experience itself is the advertising.
Each innovation has followed the same structural principle. Find the specific, documented frustration consumers have with how ketchup behaves in a real-world food moment. Build a physical change to the product that solves it. Make that change the campaign.
