Most film promotional campaigns in Los Angeles involve billboards. Netflix’s campaign for The Last House involved someone living inside one. From August 6 to August 8, 2026, a live performer occupied a fully furnished, air-conditioned living room built into a billboard roughly 30 feet above the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Selma Avenue in Hollywood, communicating with bewildered commuters below via a dry-erase whiteboard beneath the words “How long can you survive?”
The Film

The Last House is Netflix’s sci-fi thriller directed by Louis Leterrier, whose credits include Now You See Me and the Netflix hit Lupin. The film stars Greta Lee, known for Past Lives and Russian Doll, and Wagner Moura of Narcos, as married parents Ann and Jason Delgado. The story begins on an apparently ordinary Seattle morning, which turns when a sentient storm seals every home in the neighbourhood. Doors weld shut. Windows become unbreakable. Neighbours can only signal each other through glass while shadowy shapes move across the lawn in the rain. The family of four must work together against dwindling resources and an increasingly hostile environment with no way out. The film began streaming on August 7, 2026.
Leterrier described the film’s origins directly: “The Last House challenges the idea of a safe haven, turning a family home into a hostile environment where survival demands unity. This is an ordinary family’s worst nightmare, pushing them to their limits to protect each other and exposing the fragility of security and the desperate fight to reclaim it.” He has also noted that the story grew from the collective cultural experience of pandemic lockdown.
The Stunt
The billboard installation is a precise physical translation of the film’s premise. The performer inside could not leave. He ate cereal, scanned the traffic below with binoculars, waved to drivers who stared up from the road, and answered questions scrawled on a whiteboard lowered toward the pavement. The air conditioning in the billboard box was notable: Southern California was in the grip of a heatwave during the three days the performer was inside, making his elevated, enclosed living room with functioning climate control simultaneously more comfortable and more pointed than the characters he was evoking, whose resources run out as the confinement extends.
Netflix confirmed the performer’s identity through its Tudum platform, describing the installation as “an eerie echo of the film’s central predicament.” Many people passing underneath were not initially convinced the man inside was real. Footage of the installation spread quickly across Instagram, LinkedIn, and X before Netflix’s official confirmation settled the debate.
Moura, who stars as Jason in the film, described what drew him to the project in terms that the billboard activation was built to mirror: “I was so intrigued by the notion of what it might mean to wake up one day and be physically sealed in your home and not even understand why. Greta and I both connected through being parents. The love for your children and the will to do anything you can to take care of them was something we both had very strongly.”
The Billboard as Permanent Platform
The Sunset Boulevard location is not a one-time installation. Netflix operates a permanent OOH site at the intersection that has hosted a succession of creative executions tied to specific titles. A Valentine’s Day billboard gag ran from the same location in 2023. The Last House activation follows the Stranger Things Recap Cassette, part of Netflix’s wider pattern of extending its titles beyond the screen into physical, real-world experiences that generate earned media without requiring conventional advertising reach to distribute them.
The installation ran for three days. During that time, the man inside the billboard above Sunset Boulevard was, depending on one’s perspective, either the luckiest person in Los Angeles, given the air conditioning, or the most precisely cast campaign metaphor of the year.
