IKEA Canada Wrote Back-to-School Copy for the Version of College Nobody Puts on the Brochure

By Amruta Jadhav On Read 3 min read

Every back-to-school campaign addresses the student who is going to college to study. IKEA Canada and PIGEON wrote one for the student who is going to college to also nap, procrastinate, game, drag their laundry home to their parents, and occasionally, in between all of that, study. The campaign is called Made for College, and it launched across Canada from July 30 to August 26, 2026.

The Insight

The starting observation is structurally precise. Post-secondary school is one of the first times in a person’s life when a single room has to function as a bedroom, study space, gaming station, dining room, social hub, and the occasional place where learning happens. That multi-functionality is not a bug in the college living experience. It is the defining feature of it. A room that has to be everything requires furniture that is built to match.

IKEA’s product range maps directly onto that reality. The campaign’s job was to make that connection explicit without pretending that college students spend their entire day at a desk.

The Executions

Each creative execution names the real use case rather than the aspirational one. A PÄRKLA laundry bag is described as “Easy to Carry Home to Mom or Dad.” The ROSENMANDEL blackout curtains are presented as a product for students who want to “Major in Sleeping.” A KALLAX desk paired with PÄRKLA under-bed storage and a DRÖNJÖNS wastepaper basket earns the line: “Cram Here. Under Here. And in here.”

The audio executions operate in the same register. An announcer whispers about blackout blinds while a student sleeps through the afternoon. Another highlights desk features while a student is entirely absorbed in a video game session, noting casually that it is also a great place to study, if they ever decide to.

The creative honesty is the campaign’s entire competitive advantage over every other back-to-school campaign running in the same period. Brandon Tralman-Baker, Creative Director at PIGEON, described the brief: “College is one of the few times in life where your room has to keep up with you while you’re still figuring yourself out. One day it’s a study space. The next it’s a gaming station, a dining room or a nap station. We loved finding product truths that could speak to all sides of the college experience.”

The Institutional Layer

Made for College runs alongside the fourth year of PIGEON’s partnership with IKEA Canada and Humber Polytechnic’s Advertising Copywriting and Art Direction programs, where students are given real IKEA briefs to work on. Following this year’s project, PIGEON hired two Humber graduates, Joyce Jiang and Neel Aery, as interns. The brand that is selling furniture to students starting college is simultaneously giving advertising students a professional entry point into the industry they are studying for.

Jonelle Ricketts, Head of Marketing at IKEA Canada, described what the brand believes the college experience is actually for: “It’s where students build friendships, discover new interests and begin finding their independence. We’re proud to offer affordable solutions that help them make the most of both their space and their experience.”

The campaign runs nationally across connected TV, online video, out-of-home, display, social media, Spotify, and in-store channels for the duration of the back-to-school season.
