Snickers Made a Digital Candy Bar You Feed to ChatGPT When It Gives Bad Answers

By Amruta Jadhav On Read 4 min read

For more than 90 years, Snickers has told the world that you are not yourself when you are hungry. The campaign has featured athletes performing poorly, celebrities behaving strangely, and professionals making bad decisions, all of them redeemed by a single candy bar. On August 31, 2026, BBDO and Snickers extended that platform into the one context nobody had applied it to before: artificial intelligence. The diagnosis was the same. The patient was different.

The Problem the Campaign Named

AI hallucinations are one of the most discussed limitations of generative AI. The term describes the tendency of large language models to produce false information with the same confidence and fluency they use to produce accurate information. ChatGPT invents citations. It agrees with incorrect premises presented to it by users who want validation rather than accuracy. It generates plausible-sounding responses that are factually wrong. Tech professionals have been debating the causes and solutions for years.

Snickers looked at that behaviour and offered a simpler framework. The AI is not malfunctioning. It is just hungry.

Hungr.AI

Snickers Hungr.AI is described by Mars as the world’s first digital candy bar made specifically for artificial intelligence. It is available at snickers.com/hungr-ai. Users who encounter an unsatisfactory, overly agreeable, or factually questionable response from ChatGPT visit the site, click “Copy Digital Snickers,” and paste the copied content directly into their ChatGPT conversation.

The pasted content is not a photograph of a candy bar. It is a branded prompt containing instructions for the AI. The prompt tells ChatGPT to take a metaphorical “byte” of the digital Snickers and then reconsider its previous response, answering the original question again with improved accuracy and a Snickers-inflected personality. Mars specifies that the experience is intended for a user’s personal ChatGPT account and recommends the ChatGPT mobile app for optimal results. Snickers also confirms that the tool does not technically repair or alter the AI model itself; it functions as an additional instruction that changes the AI’s output during that specific conversation session.

Ashley Gill, Brand and Content Vice President at Mars Snacking, described the campaign’s positioning: “As generative AI becomes part of everyday life, we’re playfully reinventing the way Snickers connects with our fans in today’s culture.”

The Creative Team

Hungr.AI was created by BBDO Worldwide and produced by Good Behavior, with comedy spots directed by Pete Marquis. The campaign extends across digital platforms including Reddit and Snapchat, where users who engage with the Hungr.AI experience can unlock a free physical Snickers bar delivered through DoorDash. The promotion is limited to US residents aged 18 and over and runs from August 31 through September 20, 2026, with 3,000 physical bars available while supplies last.

Why the Platform Extension Works

The “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” campaign has operated successfully for over 90 years because the observation it is built on is universal. Every person has experienced a version of the hunger-driven behavioural shift it describes. The humour comes from the gap between who a person normally is and who they become when their blood sugar drops.

AI hallucinations produce an almost identical gap. ChatGPT, when functioning optimally, is a remarkably capable research and writing tool. ChatGPT, when producing a hallucination, confidently states things that are demonstrably false. The AI is not itself. The Snickers diagnosis, that it is simply hungry, requires no additional explanation to land because the parallel between the human behaviour and the AI behaviour is structurally identical.

That structural identity is what makes Hungr.AI the most natural platform extension Snickers could have made rather than a forced attempt to appear relevant to technology culture. The campaign does not claim expertise about AI. It applies the brand’s existing expertise about hunger to a new context where the expertise is, metaphorically, completely applicable.

The Broader Cultural Moment

Snickers launched Hungr.AI at a moment when generative AI is genuinely part of everyday life for hundreds of millions of people and AI hallucinations are a documented and discussed limitation that ordinary users encounter regularly. The campaign does not require the audience to have a technical understanding of language model training or retrieval-augmented generation to get the joke. It requires only that they have used ChatGPT and received an answer that felt wrong.

The result is a campaign that sits inside a real cultural conversation rather than alongside it, offering the brand’s own vocabulary, hunger, the candy bar, the recognisable tagline, as the interpretive frame for a technological phenomenon that the broader culture had not yet given a satisfying lay explanation.

The AI gets a digital Snickers. The user gets a better answer. And if they engage on Reddit or Snapchat, they get a physical Snickers through DoorDash while supplies last.
