Tank Shanghai Art Centre sits on Shanghai’s West Bund, a former industrial zone along the Huangpu River that has been converted into one of China’s most active contemporary art districts. The building it occupies is a decommissioned oil storage tank. In October 2026, LEGO filled the space and the ground around it with more than 380,000 hand-built botanical blooms, arranged into a wave that spills from the tank’s interior out onto the waterfront.

The Installation
The wave runs approximately 30 metres and covers 800 square metres. Every flower in it was built by hand using LEGO botanical pieces. The arrangement moves from the indoor exhibition space at Tank Shanghai outward onto the West Bund, treating the city itself as part of the canvas. The tagline attached to the installation is “A wave of blooms, created to awaken your joy.”
The choice of Tank Shanghai was not incidental. The venue’s industrial past and its position within one of Shanghai’s most culturally active precincts made the contrast between the raw architecture and the dense field of LEGO flowers the central visual tension of the piece.
The Visitor Experience

Inside the venue, a section called Where Blooms Begin let visitors build their own LEGO flower, scan it, and watch it enter a shared digital flower landscape that evolved throughout the exhibition’s run. The instruction attached to that experience was “Build a flower. Let it flow. See it become part of the wave.” Visitors contributed to a collective piece rather than simply observing one.
The Bloom Gallery ran alongside it, presenting 18 LEGO botanical arrangements and 18 artworks created by artists and AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO). The gallery framed the botanical series as a creative medium in its own right, not only as a product line.
The exhibition ran from October 1 to 29, 2026.
The Context
LEGO’s botanical range, which includes sets like the Flower Bouquet and the Orchid, has built a significant audience among adult collectors since the line launched. The Shanghai installation was built around that product territory, scaling what is typically a tabletop hobby into something that occupies city blocks. The same approach had been taken to Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore earlier in 2026, where a LEGO floral installation filled the Canopy Park. The Shanghai execution is considerably larger in physical scale.
Our LEGO Agency China led the creative and production work. The agency operates as LEGO’s dedicated in-house creative unit for the Chinese market. Creative direction was handled by Guo Jun, with art direction by Achao Liu and copy by Beck Deng. Head of LEGO Agency Asia Annie Boo and SVP Nicole Taylor oversaw the broader project.
