More than 90% of published books are inaccessible to blind and visually impaired readers. For families in the UK, finding affordable audiobooks for children presents an ongoing practical challenge. Commercial audio productions carry high retail prices and concentrate on popular titles, leaving a vast catalogue of literature unrecorded. At the same time, over a third of blind or visually impaired individuals in the UK face financial pressures that make paid subscription services difficult to maintain. The Royal Society for Blind Children and INNOCEAN Berlin looked at those two facts simultaneously and found a solution hiding in a routine that millions of parents perform every single evening.
The App

Bedtime Donations is a mobile application that converts nightly storytime into a crowdsourced audiobook library. Parents, volunteers, and members of the public download the app and open Reader mode, where they choose from a catalogue of copyright-free children’s stories sourced from Project Gutenberg and organised across fifteen categories. They read the story aloud into their phone. The app records the audio, runs it through automated safety and quality verification checks, and publishes it directly to the shared library.
Children access the recordings through Listener mode, browsing by story category, selecting tracks, and playing them back freely at no cost. The entire library is available without subscription, registration requirement, or payment of any kind.
The platform sidesteps the licensing barrier that has historically limited charitable audiobook production by building exclusively on public domain texts. Every story available for recording is already free to use. Every recording made by a volunteer becomes permanently available to every blind or visually impaired child using the app.
The Accessibility Architecture
The application was built to WCAG Level AAA standards, the highest tier of web accessibility compliance. A strict contrast ratio of 7:1 ensures usability for children with partial vision. High-legibility typography and full screen-reader compatibility across iOS and Android were built into the interface from the beginning rather than added as an afterthought. Children can navigate the app independently, without requiring sighted assistance, which was a foundational design requirement from the project’s outset.
The two-mode structure separates the contribution experience from the listening experience, which means the app functions correctly and intuitively for both audiences despite their fundamentally different relationships with the technology.
The Public Figure Layer
Several prominent UK public figures recorded stories for the library during the initial rollout: actors and comedians Jon Richardson, Alison Steadman, Ralf Little, Mathew Baynton, and Jon Culshaw each contributed recordings. Their involvement seeded the catalogue with recognisable voices and generated press coverage that drove downloads from parents across the country who then contributed their own recordings.
The public figure component is not the campaign’s core mechanism. It is the ignition. The long-term library is built by the cumulative bedtime routines of ordinary families, each reading session adding one more track to a resource that grows without any ongoing production budget.
Why the Approach Is Structurally Sound
Most charitable audiobook production is expensive because it requires professional studio recording, licensing agreements, and editorial curation. Bedtime Donations removes all three costs simultaneously. The recording happens in homes that already exist. The stories are public domain. The curation is automated. The only infrastructure required is the app and the verification system, which are fixed costs rather than per-unit production expenses.
The model also scales in a direction that most charitable content production cannot. Every new user who records a story permanently increases the library available to every listener. The value of the resource compounds with each bedtime session rather than requiring proportional new investment to grow.
Gabriel Mattar, European Chief Creative Officer at INNOCEAN Berlin, described the campaign’s underlying creative premise: millions of parents read stories to their children every evening, and those readings vanish the moment they end. Bedtime Donations keeps them.
