In Brazil, politicians receive a budget for work expenses. Tracking this public money is traditionally difficult and requires navigating complex bureaucratic systems. To solve this, AKQA partnered with the digital news portal Congresso em Foco to launch the Transparency Card. The campaign operates under the tagline “Eyes on the Expenses” and transforms raw government data into a format that mimics personal credit card notifications.
The physical execution bypasses the need for a standalone application. The Transparency Card lives directly within the native mobile wallet of a smartphone. The system connects to existing government databases and monitors political spending in real time. When a public official makes a purchase using public funds, the system triggers an immediate push notification to the user. The alert arrives formatted exactly like a standard bank charge, detailing the exact amount and the specific item purchased.
This strategy eliminates friction and turns the smartphone into a direct accountability tool. Over 4,30,000 active cards are currently installed in mobile wallets across the country. The system has generated more than 20 million individual push notifications. The project functions as a direct investigative resource. Journalists routinely use the platform to identify questionable expenditures and publish news reports based directly on the exposed data.
